The Alliance Française d’East London is delighted to report that this year’s Tour de Force was a resounding success. We also have a couple of exciting events coming up, so be sure to diarise the dates so you do not miss out on any of the fun.
Tour de Force
Held at 3 Silos on 11 June, the Tour de Force attracted scores of entrants and visitors. The rustic venue was transformed into a vibrant French market; the air filled with laughter, music, and the aroma of savouries, sweets, and freshly-brewed coffee.
Of the total 251 registered entrants, 176 were cyclists and 75 were runners or walkers. This was a significant improvement on last year’s 159 entries, and proves that the Tour de Force is becoming a popular event on the local calendar.
First place in the men’s 20km cycle race went to Zachary Swart, who completed the course in 00:59:52. Paul Steyn placed second with a time of 00:59:55, and Ryno Owen placed third with a time of 01:03:58.
Shannon Kirkhoff placed first in the women’s 20km cycle race, with a time of 01:05:51. Second place went to Lara-Ann Van Der Venter, who finished in 01:05:52, while Michelle Powell placed third with a time of 01:07:59.

The 5km Fun Run/Walk was enjoyed by all who participated. Competitors vied for the “Best Dressed Frenchie” prizes. Lynda and her children, Caylin and Bradley proved they know how to add a new concept to “best dressed” section. And Mr and Mrs Boeke embraced the “joie de vivre” of France with their innovative outfits.
The AFEL committee thanks convenors Pierre and Pat Viaene, as well as the other members, volunteers, stall holders, entrants, sponsors, and visitors for their outstanding work and tremendous support in making this year’s Tour de Force one to remember!

About the movie: Terra (2015) is a film by French filmmakers Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot, produced by Hope Production. The 90 minute documentary was produced over a period of 18 months, with more than 60 days of filming from the air, and 60 days of filming on the ground.
Visually stunning and often thought-proviking, Terra considers humanity’s natural history and our existence on Earth. It places our unique journey as a species within the many different phases of the planet’s growth, and it showcases the remarkable characteristics of various other life-forms with which we share the planet.
In doing so, the film encourages us to question how we now wish to interact with those other species, and shows how our own imaging and representation of nature can change the course of future events.
