Known in France as le quatorze juillet, Bastille Day is the name by which English-speaking countries refer to the French national holiday. The 14 July celebration calls to mind two important events during a turbulent time in the country’s history.
One of those events is the 1789 Storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution. The other was a celebration of unity known as the Fête de la Fédération, which was held exactly one year after the storming of the infamous prison.
The national day is celebrated throughout France with pride, pomp and ceremony. The military parade on the Champs Elysées and the fireworks display at the Tour Eiffel are televised around the world.
